Drink Offering

Philippians 2:17 says “ Yes, and I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith I am glad and rejoice with you all”
In the Old Testament it is believed that a drink offering was offered often on top of or as to finish off the “main” offering.  In this Old Testament era, drink offerings were poured out by the priests on top of animal sacrifices (Num. 15:1–10). Alec Motyer in The Bible Speaks Today: The Message of Philippians writes: ‘The regulations for this part of the sacrificial system are not absolutely clear, but we can at least say that the drink offering was the accompaniment of a larger sacrifice; it was the small thing which brought a major offering to completeness.’[1]
So why do we see Paul referring to himself as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of the Philippians faith?  Paul is looking at the possibility of a soon coming death. He is seeing his blood being poured as a joyful offering over the sacrifice and service of the Philippians faith. He is viewing his possible death as almost a “finishing touch” to their life and service.
Paul took a negative event of being martyred as something to be glad and rejoice about. How often do we encounter negative things in our own lives that—if we will offer it up as a sacrifice it will be a joy to us and to others? There will be times in all of our lives of service were we find it will cost us much. It is in those times were we can choose to serve Him begrudgingly or we can find it as finishing touch to the sacrifice of those before us and of our Savior’s ultimate sacrifice.
Only a few verses before Paul instructs us to “do all things without complaining or arguing” so that we may become “shining lights in the world.”  We see this with Jesus. He did not desire to unnecessarily go to the cross. However, if it was God’s will and the only way to accomplish the goal, He wanted to lay hold of the joy that the cross would bring—so that His light would shine into the world. We can too!
Turn you upcoming sacrifice into a final touch offering!

Jenna Berthoud is one of those women that you look at and think, “Wow, not only does she have a beautiful exterior but she’s a knockout on the inside.” She is mother to four and wife of 13 years to a wonderful, godly man. Jareb graciously supports Jenna in all she does.

Jenna is a certified Christian counselor and is currently obtaining her degree in Biblical Studies. She’s new to teaching but has been a longtime advocate of always being teachable and loving people where they are.

Her hope is to get the message out there to women of all ages that it is truly possible to practically live out the Bible and walk in holiness daily. She’s also hoping that blogging will just be another way to love and disciple people who- for whatever reason (hurts, fears, anger)- may never darken the doors of a church.
